Online chess - what can I do while playing?

Sort:

I've just started my first online game and wonder what kind of support I am enabled to use. Obviously, I cannot use any chess enginge. I don't know, however, if I can use:

- real board (e.g. to check what can happen in the following moves)

- chess books (opening, endgame, and others)

Is there any place where I can find the rules for this kind of game? (I do care to play fair)

The only thing you can't use is an engine.Opening books, etc are OK.

Yeah, you can look up end game data bases. Anything you can read is OK. Just don't use a program to make your moves and you're cool.

To really figure out the rules, you probably need to join the forum on cheating.  It gets a little complicated.  Databases are OK, but not if they're connected to a "cloud" with ongoing engine analysis.  Like wise there was a long discusiion on the forum over whether you could use the computer analysis from an old game in an ongoing one.  Consensus seemed to be yes if you had printed it out; no if it were still "digital".  I didn't get it either...Embarassed

Anyway, this all I could find officially, but as I said, Kohai and others weight in on discussions over in the cheating forum so if you're really interested you should join:
