Proper grammar is most needed in official documents, otherwise, if the individuals communicating understand one another grammar is not important.  Neither is spelling. 

One time I was in Paris, on a study abroad thing. There were people from all over Europe, as well as numerous Americans, Canadians, and an Aussie or two. We were in a bar.

One chick from Hungary, after watching us Americans butchering French repeatedly in attempts to order drinks, went off about how lazy/stupid we Americans must be to refuse to learn languages.

So, always ready to defend the homeland, I replied, "You are from Hungary, right?"

"Yes"

"How many official languages does your country have?"

"Two (I think she said) German and Hungarian" (? I don't remember, long ago, many beers."

"Ok, and within, say, a 4 hour drive from your house, how many other languages will you come in contact with?"

She rattles off a list, Magnar, Czech, Polish, various German Dialects, various Baltic languages, perhaps a Russian or two...

So I say, "Where I live, I would have to get in my car and drive for approximately 15 hours or so to get somewhere where another language is spoken. That would give you the choice between French Canada, or Mexico. Most of the people I'd come into contact with there (waiters, etc.) speak English anyway. So tell me, why the hell would I bother? I will spend maybe a month in my entire life abroad, is that worth learning a multitude of tounges?"

That seemed to shut her up.

Proper grammar and spelling is what seperates a properly educated person from a barbarian. Think its not important? Good luck finding a job.

Oh, I know, you say that in an interview, or at work, you will use proper grammar. Problem is, if you don't get into a habit of it, you won't know how when the time comes.

I think you missed my point.  I was referring to people that feel a little embarrassed because they make mistakes on these threads.  Otherwise, I agree with you that good grammar is important.  Many disagreements, even in these threads, come from poor writing and language skills, but as long as we understand each other when discussing chess, nothing else matters.  At least it certainly doesn't to me. 

Para empezar y retomando el curso de la conversación original, me parece que es cierto que hay algunas diferencias subjetivas entre tener a un adversario humano real enfrente con toda la experiencia que ello significa, o jugar sobre la computadora. Personalmente, pienso que juego mucho mejor en la computadora que con jugadores en tiempo real, pero me sigo considerando muy principiante.

Por otro lado, a mi me sigue impresionando que se esgrima la ignorancia, o el desinteres por aprender cultura universal, como arma para dictar cual es el modo correcto de interactuar. Ese no es el espíritu de la internet. Por el contrario, hacemos un esfuerzo con conciliar nuestras diferencias para enriquecimiento mutuo. Me apena mucho que alguien que disfruta el ajedrez lo suficiente como para leer los foros de un sitio especializado simultáneamente defienda la rigidez del pensamiento por sobre la versatilidad o creatividad.

Finalmente, si algún día la comunidad china llegase a dominar económicamente el mundo, creo que todos tendríamos que hacer el esfuerzo de aprender mandarín (como ya ocurre en muchos sitios). La ventaja que tienen aquellos acostumbrados a nominar con distintos idiomas sería aplastante. Les doy un atento saludo a todos los hispano parlantes, asi como anglo parlantes que tengan la humildad de traducir este texto.

A facilidade que eu tive para entender esse texto, mesmo sem nunca ter freqüentado uma única aula de espanhol, é uma das coisas que alimenta minha preguiça para aprender sua língua.

Não precisamos aprender mandarim. É só usar um tradutor automático eficiente, como eu fiz para entender o que você escreveu.

Espero que até a China dominar o mundo os tradutores automáticos sejam ainda melhores...

Rubbish.  Most of the engineers I work with--with the notable exception of one--cannot write properly.  That's why there is a technical writer on board.

If I hire a guy to run a shovel, I couldn't care less about whether or not he can conjugate a verb.

I've had the same experience with chemists and chem e's. Technical writers come in handy.
