Online rating vs. FIDE rating

Why are there so many different rating systems out there? Can't one size fit all so you know where you're at?

I was reading this one thread at some point and it said only if you have something to do with the FIDE or something like that you can be promoted to IM/ GM, whatever, through the website.

Why not form a standardised system where even online you can achieve this title? I'm aware some people have a family to raise who don't even have the time to take a time-out to turn up to professional chess events etc, but why can't we earn a serious chess record online through the FIDE that can apply to anyone?

One reason would be the use of engine's online which depending on who you ask happens a little or a lot. Or you could easily have a superior player sit next to you and help you during games. Stuff like that kinda craps on your idea although it would be cool if my rating actually ment something.

Yeah, thanks; I know what you mean now. Unfortunately we can't escape from these cheating muppets who are ruining online chess.

Online they might think they will get far, but in the long run they will be smashed. It's a pity we don't have procedures in place in order to detect these wankers.
