Online ratings especially Blitz & Bullet give poor guide to actual playing abillities

I think if you have only ever played chess online with Blitz or Bullet you can have a false sense of actual playing abillity regards to endgame abilities My uncle a strong 2200 over the board player told me spend your time over the board learn your Endings and Middle games setups before getting addictions on Blitz play!? We had a guy at our chess club he knew no other way to play our over the board league was 1Hr 20min for whole game, when you played him he would play like Blitz and with time against him his opponents knew they could find the weak holes in his play!?

playing blitz can help you with establishing playing quickly and intuition but i agree to really improve you should take your time on longer rapid games and study endgames

On the latest posting I can see the reason for not agreeing as he has a 1900 rating OTB and as such will know his Endings and Middle game setups, this is learned during ones over the board play which was the the original reference as if you only have ever played Blitz or Bullet chess and not over the board you cannot expect to have complete knowledge in your Endings as I learned in my early years with my uncle.
We improve our OTB classical with blitz and bullet. I will beat your 2200 uncle easily I am very good in classical chess.

HI Quite_Playablr_1 I am sure you are good player, however my uncle is now in heaven probably still playing chess, he was a strong player and won several chess tournaments at his prime and people play all there lives and rarely achieve his dedication.
"people play all there lives and rarely achieve his dedication" ++Exactly, so do not tell us what to do. We love online blitz and bullet. I heard players from the past were very weak chess players. An 1900 FIDE now is very strong.
By the way name, your uncle. It sounds imaginary to me.

The thread title matters, if that's your thing, I suppose. Everyone knows this and almost no one cares, except, of course, those who keep obsessing about playing strength and real chess
OTB chess is real chess. Many kids play bullet and blitz online because it is fun. But those who have only played online tend to be much weaker than classical OTB players.
i tell students to avoid bullet and blitz if they actually want to become a strong chessplayer.
Yes, but we can play OTB classical too.

badger_song Do you think I cannot beat you easily at OTB classical chess. Surely I can. Even if I solely play online bullet.
Kids who play bullet a lot, have a higher sense of positional instincts. And faster at calculation and can sense the correct move from wrong move also known as intuition.

In blitz knowing your endgames (or rather how to play them ) is extremely important if not the most important skill in blitz other then time management
Is it the most fun skill to learn no but is it extremely helpful yes (plus learning to swindle is underrated but you don't really learn that in rapid )
