Does an open seek only last for a very short time before it expires?  Seems like I just set one up and a few minutes later it was gone...

No, I dont think it expires.

Maybe somebody accepts and then aborts

Ya it happants to me too. But it's actually Still activated. Press on another tab and go back to challenge and the dot reappears.
