Opening Goals.

Does anyone know of a resource which discusses the basic (long term) idea of each opening without necessarily going into depth on each line.  Finding such a resource before starting to study openings in depth, I believe will help (certainly me) in understanding the reasons behind each move.

You might want to check out the "Chess King's Guide to Opening Ideas".  It's 3 DVDs narrated by Steve Lopez on the open, closed, and semi-open games. Let me find a link to the Chess King site.  Sometimes their stuff is a little cheaper on Ebay.  And it's on sale!

I used it a lot for about six months.  It gives a great introduction to a new opening, but you'll outgrow it quickly in the sense that the lines simply aren't deep enough for practical play.  Still useful for stuff I haven't encountered before just to get a feel for what's going on before hitting FCO or a database.

Sorry no idea.   I think a book like that would help a lot of club players.

the closest I can think of is "pawn structure" by Soltis. you should be able to hunt down a PDF online.
