It's actually hard to say whether the scoring system will result in fewer draws or more draws.
On the one hand, the 3 points make it attractive for top players to play for wins as far as possible and develop game plans to squeeze out even a small advantage out of nothing.
On the other hand, the players can be wary that should their opponent win, they will be massively ahead in game points, so they might attempt to defend as far as possible into draws.
Hey y'all!
Just wondering what the community thinks of 3-1-0 scoring (points from wins-draws-losses respectively). It is effectively a method of devaluing draws thus favoring decisive and 'interesting' games.
WHY:
The reasoning being that its much easier and safer to make a quick draw at top chess even moreso in classical time formats compared to fighting for a win (of course extremely difficult and interesting draws exist) especially since top players are very good at defense and prep leading to very safe and risk-free openings and approaches
PROS:
1) More 'risky'/'combative'/'unpopular' openings and plays may be seen
3) Decrease of quick draws
4) Discourages 'boring'/'save'/'overused' openings such as berlin defense
5) May make classical chess more popular
CONS:
1)May award worse players more points due to decisive games compared to players with mostly draws but overall a better score
2)May devalue more consistent and technically 'better' playstyles
3)May make it easier for lower-rated players to do better in tournaments as higher-rated players will have more to lose going for decisive games in terms of rating points
Any other scoring systems you prefer?
HOW IT WORKS:
A simple way to look at its effects is by calculating the points gained from 2 draws as opposed to 1 win and 1 loss; 2:3 (points from 2 draws and 1 loss,1 win respectively) as we can see the decisive games give 50% more points as compared to 2 draws even though the strength of chess ability shown remains equal thus awarding points for 'showmanship'. This is in stark contrast to traditional scoring where both results would net equal points.
