Haven't tried OTB yet.
OTB vs Internet Chess
Indeed, I have a hard time really motivating myself to play an Internet game. It's just not the same as when you're playing in a tournament against an actual person for money.
I find OTB much more interesting and challenging. Internet chess, to me, is a bit boring and yes less motivating.
I enjoy OTB more. It's hard for me to sit though a long game online, but if someone at the club wants a 10 or 20 minute game it's odd but I have no problem with that.
Maybe part of it is the analysis afterwards. Even if I get crushed I can say something like, that was a really good attack, I didn't see ____ move, and then they might say yeah, _____ was your last chance for a reasonable defense.
Or if you run out of time you can say, I was thinking this move, and you talk about the position a bit. In an online game after 30 minutes of play, after the game is over you're not even sure if you can get a rematch, there's no analysis, you don't get to see the body language etc.
After a few years or more of playing various styles of internet chess (mainly blitz, some 30min, the occasional 45min/45s incr, and a rare correspondence game) I've recently started playing OTB at a local chess club. Somehow I could never really see how this would be better than playing on the internet (and of course there's the convenience of playing at home, anytime, etc. etc.) but I really think it is. There seems to be more focus to it and being able to see your opponent and playing on a board just seems more real. It's taken me a few games to get used to playing on a board as opposed to looking at a computer screen (my excuse for an exceptionally poor first few games ;-)) but otherwise it's nice and I now find it almost impossible to get motivated for a 30min internet game or such like (correspondence maybe as I tend to set the position up on a board anyway...).
Anyone had similar thoughts/stories switching to OTB?
