Our games and database

I was wandering if the games we play on here are then added to the database ? so when we click explore we can see a position we have ourselves had before?

Or is the database of games only from official tournaments ?

Forget that, I just found the drop down box to explore from game options including my own.

Would it no be pertinet to add all games played online to the master database so in effect there is like a global database of recorded games, like chessbase for example, or do they need to be FIDE tournament games and not online ?

On a related subject, I have found the chess.com "Explorer" facility immensely helpful (and I'm told perfectly ok to use in online games), which I believe refers to the aforementioned "database". Becoz I don't know book moves that well, learning what the options are is much appreciated. What it doesn't do is differentiate between the relative strengths of the various book moves (and if the aftermatch computer analysis is to be believed that matters also). I must admit though I feel happier when we are out of book becoz then it truly does become a pit of wits between two falliable opponents. About the suggestion of putting all games into the database, I like that tho I see it may be impractical, as it might help further in that great goal of improving as a result of learning from ours and other peoples mistakes.

Ah, but what if instead of 5 or 6 options in the Game Explorer, you had a dozen or more, some of them awful moves but with good stats because they are only seen in games between very weak players?   Then the usefulness would be practically ruined.

There are databases available with millions of master games.  What possible benefit could adding millions more games full of beginner mistakes be?

I am not trying to argue, merely trying to figure it out really.

Are mistakes not as important as "good moves" from masters ?

I mean i recently won a game against a much higher player, i basically made poor moves a couple of times, had i seen them in the explorer i probably wouldnt of played them i give you that, yet they won me the game ultimately.

I think databasing bad moves is as important as good ones, you mention the use of seeing awful moves by beginner mistakes, but chess games are infinite, not all the good moves or games have been played, I am sure there are some fantastic games played amongst beginners that are not in the "master game" database but worthy of being so ?

perhaps i am waffling though....LOL

Normally when you are using the opening explorer, it's to find good moves in a certain position, and the type of moves/positions which branch from it, so you know if the resulting positions will be to your benefit/something you want to play.

If you include beginner games, you're essentially filling it with misinformation. A beginner may play an intuitive but poor move, their opponent wasn't good enough to capitalise so they may have gone on to win. So a move which may lose outright to a tactic in master play could show a 50% win rate, causing you to play it and then fall victim to a tactic. Even if it's not that bad, you wont be seeing the strong moves which take advantage of the positional features because they will be lost among weaker moves.

I thought that still wasn't working right? I know mine still shows no games.

Only online chess is working (mine has more games than I've played?). Unless it includes unrated in which case it doesn't have every game.

Ahh, I only play live chess and it always says no games played. I remember they said they were working on it at one point but I don't think it is ever going to work again.

But it gets a little messy.  All too often do amateurs mistake good moves for bad ones and vice versa.  I've seen this in other's game as well as my own.

For example, you may see a "bad" move that was actually a great clearence sacrifice for example, but was not followed up correctly and this player lost.  Of course after this move you see the "punishment" but actually this "punishment" move is a blunder and because his opponent blundered back you never knew.

So at the very least, if a beginner game is in a database you'd want it to be vs a titled player.  That way you know the "punishment" and "good" moves you're seeing are at least somewhat grounded in reality.

To explore bad moves or non database moves, you'd want to purchase (or dl for free) a chess engine and explore all you like :)

I have been playing for a little bit... Is there a reason that only 1 of my games is in the dropdown menu for my games?  I play mostly 5/2 games.

this is an old thread but is there any way i could find information on lower rated player win percentages with certain openings? like 400 players to 1000 rated players? im doing a research project and can only find games where the players play near perfect. (this kind of does not accurately show all players win rate when using an opening so i need lower rating games as well even if the information may be erratic because of all the blunders they make)

You would have to manually get a sampling of lower rated player and then you could either manually get their games, use Explorer to look at the openings, or use the API to download the games and run local analysis on them.

Useful to see the good AND bad moves according to their elo rank. Not sure why that hasn't been mentioned. Seeing the differences in moves depending on skill level lets you easily assess the caveats you guys and gals mentioned.

You learn what move NOT to make, and what move TO make. Feels like not having an "all games played" database is a miss.
