Over-Playing

As a young chess player, I've recently been playing more and more chess both in leagues and on chess.com.  I also just updated to a Diamond membership, allowing me access to unlimited tactics trainer and chess mentor.  Unfortunately, I think that I have been 'over-playing' the game of chess.  I'm starting to become extremely aggravated during league and tournament games, and chess is starting to become more of a mental burden than a fun hobby.  I would love suggestions on how to remedy this, because I really do enjoy the game, and my team appreciates me, but I'm also at a point where I can't back out and I can't take TOO large of a break, due to matches every week.  Help!!

Wow, becoming extremely aggravated with chess is serious when you want to enjoy chess.  But in reality, it's not chess, but that you have overloaded yourself with activities of chess, of which you seem well aware. I am waiting to learn what advice you receive about this.  I looked into joining a group, but I know I do not want to spend that much time.  I spend too much time just reading forums.  I only joined chess.com to improve my chess and nothing more, but I made the mistake of checking out the forums.  I don't regret it, however.

My suggestion would be to do how one does any downsizing of any thing that has one overburdened, and that is just start eliminating things, such as, when one match is finished don't start another one.

If you are really feeling that way about the only thing you can do, other than burnout, is take a break. You might have to sacrifice something, such as team matches, until you feel better about playing chess. Get it back to that fun level and don't worry about other people; it's a game and hobby, not a job. They'll understand.

That's definitely how I feel, and if it hasn't been established, I play on my school team, and I hold one of the top five boards on the team (3).  I would feel much better about leaving the team if had a replacement, but there is an extremely large gap of playing ability between our third and fourth board.  But yes, a hiatus is definitely in my horizon!  Thanks for the comments!

I swing back and forth between the two. One is a destructive as the other. But chess has a way of leveling the playing field by humbling the ego problem.

I know how you feel. After playing 20 to 30 games at at time for 2 years running, I burned out. i love to play but the constant pressure of having to keep up with the computer wore me down. I suggest you back off the computer and take it down a notch and play some face to face games. That will satisfy your need for chess and some day you might feel like another run with the computer.CoachChess wrote:

everyone has a limit they have that decides if chess is a hobby or a mental burden for me that is around 20-30 online games, for you it may be different. the one thing i think one should do when they start feeling chess is a mental burden is to stop playing the game  for awhile, a day or a week what ever the time period it helps. our you should cut down alot in the number of games. i hope this helps

If this is the case.  I recommend degrading your account to the free version and finding other games to play as an alternative, such as Minecraft (PC), inFamous (PS3), Halo Reach (XBox 360).  If you don't want these, then I recommend carrying a stress ball.

Shake it up a little.

Watch some chess videos, play puzzle duels, learn lessons, try to play blind chess vs. the computer...

There's always something else out there you can learn or do.
