I completely agree with you, in shorter time controls we are obsessed with winning by a brilliant tactical move early in the game. Shorter games are not taking us anywhere are they?

There are a lot of opinions about it.

I don't play blits and other short time control games. However, I do believe they can be used to focus on things like openings and perhaps increasing memory recall speed.

But, if you are really serious about learning chess, they are not the best tool at your disposal.

BTW - If I have not mentioned it. Learning with longer time controls can improve your short time contorl games. It will take some time. But how long and how much depends on your commitment to learning the game.

Pawn storm is like a steam roller. If you just sit there then of course you'll get run over. But it takes a number of moves to move those pawns. Don't just sit there, do something!

This is the game you tried to post earlier. You stuck an extra "," in at the end of your link.

I don't know what to say here. You really did totally freeze up. Since you had already offered to sacrifice a pawn with 11.. g5, you could have tried keeping your own pawn roller going with 12..g4.

12.. Qe8 or 13..Qe8 would have at least allowed you to save your bishop.

The thing that is the most horrible about your game is how you locked yourself into that closed game.  With 1..d5, you are saying that you want an open game and are probably looking to make a quick attack with your queen and are willing to have your queen chased a little bit by better players.  That may not be the best strategy against a grandmaster, but it probably works  well enough against 900 rated players pretty often.

However, with 2.. e6 and 3..Nc6, you lock yourself into a closed position which was undoubtedly miserable for you to play.  You don't have to do that to yourself.  I think 2..c5 or 3.. c5 would have been much more comfortable for you. With 4.. Be7, you had cemented yourself into position and so tied up you had to consider ludicrous moves like 5..f6 to avoid having to play 5.. Nh6.

If you want to lock yourself up like that, you might have found 4.. Nge7 and 5 .. Ng6 left you a little breathing room.

As it was, you had no way to open up the center as suggested by Blueemu. You had no choice but to retreat your pieces once the pawns started coming. That certainly would have been better than just standing there.
