pay for extra
$5 a month x 100,000 some users, plus golds, platinums, and diamonds= $800,000 per month or, with yearlys included, $10,000,000 per year!
Not even close my slow witted friend. There are 100,000+ registered users, but only about 12500 or so have played more than a handful of chess games. Most of the premium features are geared towards people who play chess here.
The assumption that all members are paying is also false. Let's take a quick sample. Looking at the players list, out of the top 200 players only 14 are paying members (7%). I checked 10 random pages lower down the rating list and out of those 500 members there were only 15 (3%) who were paying members. I would guess roughly 5% of the players are paying members.
5% of 12500 is 625. Just to be generous, let's assume that they are all platinum memberships. Then you're looking at a shade under $50,000 for the year. Luckily for chess.com, it's a growing site with new features and an expanding membership base. I'm sure they expect to have more subscribers in the future.
I don't expect Erik to release actual membership totals, but it's really unfair to make a post claiming they are bringing in millions of dollars.
i hear you. sorry you missed the notices. and sorry people were being rude about it. :(
I can see why prices are so low here. $5 a month x 100,000 some users, plus golds, platinums, and diamonds= $800,000 per month or, with yearlys included, $10,000,000 per year!
