It's most likely a connection issue. Very often this used to happen to me - the game would be seem to running, but the truth is that after your opponent made his/her move, the move was transmitted, and your clock started running, but it didn't show up on your computer until a lot later.
I'm not sure there's much to be done, maybe you need better connection?
But it's not cheating - that's pretty near impossible.
Very high lag causes this. I've experienced it sometimes. Just don't play until your connection gets better.
This is unfair and should be corrected. Why has chess dot com not done so? Why differentiate between paying and non paying in this way? Please explain.

It is not a paying/non-paying issue.
It is an internet connection issue (usually) of the person that gets affected. It is called lag. See the post above yours and @Cherub_Enjel's post.
Thing is, I'd seriously like to know how something like this is possible, if it even is.
I guess technically you could if - IF - you somehow gained control of the chess.com server (like that would ever happen) or you could somehow put in a lag switch (like the old FPS lag switches - do they still have those now?) you could do it.
I thought to use a lag switch though you had to be the one hosting it but it has been a looooong time since I messed around with them.
It's not a lag prob. I just played. The opponents time was at 19 seconds and going down. Then it jumped to 30 sec. does a lag add time. Lol
Umm, yes it does. Learn what lag is and how it affects timers.
There are too many coincidences to think it is random that so many times as soon as My opponents are in trouble in blitz or bullet my time goes haywire and freezes! I am pretty certain tech savvy hacking types can cheat by disconnecting their opponents. Chess.com must address this issue immediately or it is not worth paying for membership!
There are two ways to achieve this hack. One involves an incantation by a powerful shaman, and the other involves an artificial gravity source to dilate time. Without being there while you were playing, I can't tell you which way was used against you.
Don't be (reverse EVIAN) to think that if they are bots to play on chess.com, bots that can fake time cannot exists.

No, I'm afraid that's not possible - please see Why did the clock times suddenly change? The clocks seem broken! for the actual explanation.

I have noticed that some people have been somehow stopping their clock for about a minute, and then when their clock runs again, the time has been taken off MY clock. I have lost many games this way, so is there anything Chess.com or I can do about it?
