OTB games are not your cup of tea.

Bearing in mind I've been playing forty years, I beg to differ ....If we played there is only a remote chance I would hit you over the head if you decentralised ! One lump or two ?

heres a fun tip for OTB players... if someone adjusts "your" pieces?    immediately reach out and put the piece back the way it was!    i do it ALL the time since reading this thread.  i think i might have even made this one boy in our club cry?  after i did it about three times his eyes got all red and "teary" looking... GIRL POWER

Provided that he first expresses his intention (for example by saying “j’adoube” or “I adjust”), only the player having the move may adjust one or more pieces on their squares.

If it's a serious tournament, you're wasting effort trying to distract your opponent. Anyone above ~1000 won't be affected by it and will proceed to put extra effort towards crushing you.

I had a habit of adjusting pieces needlessly. It wasn't intentional at all, just used to happen.I used to adjust the pieces in my opponents turn repeatedly not realising how annoying it can be.It took 3 of my opponents calling the arbiter to make me get rid of it.Sometimes these things are instinctive,i dont think most people mean to disturb opponents or anything.Like Gelfand has a habit of spinning the captured pieces but stopped immediately once franciso vallejo called the arbiter.

your probaly right and i thank you for the insight.  what i don't understand is y someone over 1000 would j'adoube in the first place?  it looks foolish when they are constantly fiddling with the pieces... and j'adoubers (i luv that word) may be so involved with j'adoubing that they would lack any extra effort to actually crush an opponent (b'cuz they seem so intent on j'adoubing).  i enjoy messing wit j'adoubers... it adds an element of excitement to long, drawn out games at our school's chess club
