He's a 2600+ GM, not too shabby. And he's more of a second than a coach.
He's probably most useful to Magnus for communicating his understanding of current opening theory.

Most professional football coaches aren't as good as the players they coach. It's all about the ideas dude.
In fact, in all of sports, it is rare that a "star" player goes onto coach successfully and very common for an average player to be a good coach. Sure, ideas are important. I've always thought very talented players get frustrated when they attempt to coach players less talented than themselves.
Why is he even coaching Magnus Carlsen?
