That's true Nikki, but he had to get through it to get to the rapid. Both sides could have won you know.

If you want the highest quality chess, go watch Stockfish play Leela. Their games are infinitely more interesting than those of Magnus and Fabi. Humans are just dumber versions of computers in classical chess, and about as personable.

@stassneyking — the fact remains, he’s not proven he’s the best at the game you profess is best.
stassneyking

I prefer Alpha vs Stockfish, and I must admit the games shown to the public were more interesting than most in Carlsen/Caruana. Maybe some day we will get there if we continue to strive for the best. I could not agree with your quote more - "Humans are just dumber versions of computers in classical chess, and about as personable." Nice one lol

stassneyking

He is the highest rated isn't he? I wouldn't say that is "proof" but it is what it is.

Those are the most fun horselover. Okay, now lets get some more people to sign!

i'm not getting arthritis

but i am losing a ton of games

i really suck with trackpad but i can't use the mouse in the air and i like to use my laptop and play chess while sitting on the couch lol

lol I like to lay down, but it hurts my mouse speed. Usually when playing bullet I sit down and put the mac on a table.

@stassneyking - So then had Fabi found that ridiculous 30 move mate that a supercomputer dug out of its soulless mind, then Fabi wouldn’t be the best in the world because the Norwegian scowler has a higher rating? So why even play a championship at all, especially since it hasn’t proven what it purports to demonstrate. My god those games were dull. Sveshnikov theory for 15 moves game after game after game. Yuck! Double yuck! How is that testing anything interesting!? Yuck!
stassneyking

Well you know, highest rated or world champion who is to say who is the best? It would have been pretty amazing though if he found it or played into it. Then again, there is no way Magnus would have taken a draw in the final game where he was better, so I don't really know how that would have effected the result to be honest. Yeah the games could have been more interesting and I wish we saw some different opening choices. I think we will see more interesting games in the future though now that Alpha zero has shaken up the chess world.

horselover It is true theory plays a large role in classical chess, but the large majority of top level games still go out of theory at some point. It is just way more relevant and critical at the highest level. That's why top players are always trying to out prep their opponents. We still see great novelties all the time!

NikkiLikeChikki
If they do copy the tactics and strategies of neural networks, then they really are just inferior versions of computers who play less interesting games. If they play 30 rapid games instead of 12 classical games, I can guarantee you that we will see a huge variety of openings as each player tries to catch the other out of prep. The games will be much more interesting and much more entertaining, with less focus on preparation and more on pure otb skills. The WCC hasn’t had a signature moment in forever. There have been no moves that have set the imagination on fire in this century, and isn’t that what we want?

Hate it please get rid of the changes.
stassneyking

Well Alpha has a fundamentally different way of thinking than Stockfish and definitely plays moves that "set the imagination on fire" so to take this as inspiration is good for the game. I think if Magnus or Fabi were a little bit better, we could have seen some crazy stuff.

I would love to watch a rapid match between the two, and I agree it would probably be more dynamic. However, the quality of play would decrease and the players would not have the chance to play to their full potential. I mentioned earlier Caruana would not even have a chance to show his brilliant mind to the world which is selling the game short.

stassneyking

Would love to talk more, but have work in the morning. Good night everyone, I'll be back tomorrow.

to be honest

(my opinion not trying to offend y'all)

most gm's study so much opening theory up to thirty moves and memorize all the stuff

to the point where if you play a certain line, you can force a draw, or etc.

chess is kinda suffering a draw death in classical

but in bullet/blitz/maybe rapid?? you don't have the time to recall "oh if i play this line, i get an advantage here and disadvantage here" or "if i play this line, i can force a draw, and this is all i need to secure 1st in this tournament" or any of those things

it's more interesting and way less drawish in shorter time controls

at this point, classical chess is just whoever has the better memory, not whoever has the better abilities

But this was Bobby Fischer's claim so many years ago, and Chess has been nothing short of fantastic and exciting since Fischer made this claim. From what I understand and see when top players really go at it, is that they play different lines and moves at a certain point to throw their opponent off, and that is still really interesting. There was a game I was hooked on recently where Fabiana Caruana pushed the h pawn out of theory against Magnus and it had me on the edge of my seat. I don't think it comes down to who has a better memory at all.

Rodgy

Yes, but I am afraid they are unable to Undo those changes...

NikkiLikeChikki
There is nothing genius or novel about pushing an h pawn. It has become the standard “well, I don’t know what else to do” move since Leela started doing it regularly in computer chess.
