1. Direct attack / direct defense with random moves in between

2. Learn some basics

etc.

Still trying to fill in all the holes. Maybe this feeling never ends though.

One distinguishing factor I would describe as:  "the player who knows more appears to be more patient."

Whether a long or short term goal, they're aware of its presence in the position, so they don't mind taking time to deal with your threat, or better organize their pieces. Meanwhile in the same positions you'd be trying to immediately "do something" or play passively.
