Phone CALL during a match!!!

Well it sometimes happen that we are playing a rated match and suddenly a good friend or relative calls you. Now my question is what would you do in such cases and what should be done if both the tasks are equally important?

Do NOT answer the phone.  Just because it rings does not mean you have to answer the call.

But it could always hurt someone. Should I always do it?

Phones should be off during a real tournament.  If it rings, it's a penalty or maybe even a forfeit.  If you answer, definitely a forfeit and you'll probably get kicked out of the tournament as well.  If something important is expected to happen during that time, don't play in a chess tournament

I usually answer the phone and lose the game... Bad multitasking skills...

I got a call from a doctor's office needing to ask me what seemed like 5 minutes of questions when, fortunately, I was near the start of a 15/10 time game.  I ran down to 9 seconds on the clock but, fortunately, was in a long endgame where I knew I just had to keep the opposition and run my time back up to a couple minutes.

Would they feel worse if you answered and lost because of them, or if you didn't answer at all?

Is it your opponent calling you to tell you not to answer your phone during a game of chess?

A little off topic but this thread reminds me of a game I played on my iphone yesterday. I had 4+2 seconds left on my clock but all I had to do was deliver mate in one. Then, right when I went to move, my wife called me and I couldn't close the phone app in time to get back the game and lost as a result.  Man that one stung. Thank god my wife couldn't hear the names I was calling her, I'd be a dead man lol

Let's hope she doesn't read your posts here ...

One should answer the phone call. Chess is just a board game that this website makes you think is really important. It is easy to inflate a chess game or even a video game to a higher status than it deserves. However, if you have caller ID and can see that it is probably a telemarketer then obviously you ignore the phone call. I only play correspondence chess now so I have 24 hours to make one move. The rapid games always freeze up on me during the game and I lose on time. There is so much lag that even to make one move when I know where I want to go takes a full minute. I have to click the piece I want to move a dozen times to get it to highlight so I can move it.

instant forfiet in otb if a phone goes off in a team match , however if say you expect an urgent call whilst playing the silent option is reasonable but , pre match its made clear all phones turn off

a team match tends to last 3 hours , isnt it reasonable for anyone to lose their obsession with a phone for such a short time ?

If you are playing a game with time control with less than 3 minutes left (depending on the situation), it is best not to answer it. Otherwise, it will not hurt to answer a call while playing chess at the same time. Your concentration will not be as focused on the game, so it really is up to you.

(I'm referring to online chess not OTB). If it's a potential emergency then ALWAYS answer, you could answer and when you know it's not urgent you can continue both the call (hands free loud speaker) and the game, or if that's difficult, say, I'll call you back in 5 mins.

ah ok
