I always took the gum out of my mouth and stuck it to the square.
It helps to take different colored pieces of gum to a chess tournament.
Oh and also, remember to choose a different color from your opponent, I have had very confusing games when we both used the same color, and putting our pieces back sometimes changed the board in a very interesting and dynamic way. however, tournament officials would frown on the sudden appearence of my king on my opponents first rank.
