Hi all, hope everything is well in the chess community.
I was wondering what your opinions are about the following. It is based on a game I played a few months ago where I got to a position where I did not have a move due to all my opponents pieces being defended. I realize what I am about to say seems obvious, but it seems there is something more to it.
So after that game I pondered about this question. Can a game be played from start to finish keeping all pieces defended throughout. I get that this rule has to be bent in certain situations, like when you attack a piece, leaving the defense of the other. Or when an unseen threat forces you to.
Anyway I started trying it, but without really focusing on the game (almost as if I did not need to - except when I saw a tactic or breakthrough coming). When it was my move, I asked what square is right for my queen. Let's say out of the 4 squares the queen could go, one was defended. So that is the one I chose. If I wanted to move up a pawn, I defended the square first and then proceeded with the pawn. It was like this little game. You cannot put a piece on an undefended square. Yes I know this cannot be done until the end game, well only if you play accurately. The downside is that it is a slower play, breaking the tempos, cause you defend every piece first before you continue with strategy. However it almost does not matter if you lose time cause the opponent cannot break through anywhere or gain a tempo, attacking a loose piece. I do take into account that higher rated players will just triple attack a piece and I would get run over, so I also understand the importance of tempos and coordination.
Weird thing I then realized was that it seemed like I was dominating almost every game I played more than before. I then looked at GM games and saw they kind of do this, but yeah, in a very creative way.
Also note that my main focus here is on the middle game.
And my point.... doing this it almost felt like the game played itself and pieces that I moved to undefended squares was 90% of the time the wrong move.
Any thoughts
