2... Nxe5 would protect the bishop, threaten the white queen and light square bishop, all while taking white's knight. 2... Nxe5 is black's correct response.
Pinned Knight Trap
This is the Legal Trap, or rather the unsound version of it...AtaraxiaAle is right, Nxe5 would give Black the advantage. Are you sure Crafty actually suggested this? (The usual version of the trap requires White to play 1.h3 to poke the bishop to h5 before playing 2.Nxe5; after which 2. ...Nxe5 does not defend the bishop and White remains a pawn up with 3.Qxh5. If Black tries 3. ...Nxc4 then White regains the piece with 4.Qb5+. Though given the existence of this trap, Black should of course avoid playing 1. ..Bh5 after 1.h3 in the first place...Bxf3 is the better (though not exactly fantastic) response.)
I was using Crafty to analyze one of my games the other day, and I discovered that I made a serious, serious mistake. Fortunately for me, my opponent never saw the trap. Fortunately for you, next time, you'll see it PERFECTLY.
The moral of this story: Be careful when you "pin" down a knight!
