bean chess boards are the way to go
Plastic, Wood, or doesn't matter?

My father learned me the moves when I was 5-6 years old and we played on his set with a roll-up vinyl board and wooden pieces. The set is still with us but dad passed a quarter of a century ago. I recently bought me a new chess set and first I ordered wooden pieces but was not pleased with the quality so I changed them for solid plastic (generic Staunton design with 3.85 inches king height) at about one fourth of the cost. I must say that I am very pleased with my plastic pieces though I cannot sat that I play better with them.

my mum got me a starwars chess set for christmas one year. all the peices were differant haha
Aww ( 15 years ago 🥲)
wood or plastic doesn't matter to me as long as the board and pieces are significantly large. The roll up vinyl sets work perfectly, and I find I don't calculate as well with smaller sets.
Yes, size and weight are more significant than other, purely aesthetic, matters.
For the tournaments I host, though, I think I am going to get one set of wooden pieces, comparable in size and weight to plastic pieces, for use on the "top board". It's a bit cheesy, but I think it will be a nice touch.
