Players Chess News

This 1984 photo shows John van der Wiel, Lajos Portisch and Lev Polugaevsky looking at a copy of "Players Chess News."

Does anyone know anything about this particular publication?

Nyet!

It's got the FIDE logo in the top corner. Nowadays their Chess News is online, but could this be the pre-internet version of FIDE Chess News?

batgirl

Possibly. It's all News to me.

Players Chess News was a publication designed to get the latest tournament games to readers quickly. It didn't have much else- just lots of games. It went bankrupt decades ago.

Player's Chess News was not a FIDE publication. It was an attempt to fill a niche for serious players back in the day when Chess Life's coverage of international chess was both slow and sketchy. I think GM James Tarjan was an editor. It may seem odd in this Chessbase/Internet world, but if fillied a real gap back then and was a lifeline for a lot of players. It was a predecessor of Yasser's "Inside Chess."

I found one mention of an International Players Chess News [The Players Chess Association]  It was published between 1983–1985 so it fits the time frame of the photography.  https://www.google.com/books/edition/Chess_Periodicals/0zptPdUVofcC?hl=en&gbpv=1&dq=%22International+Players+Chess+News%22&pg=PA101&printsec=frontcover

Not having an idea either for this magazine or the photo, and just looking around in web for names and dates, it may be photo from OHRA 1984, where these three seem to play, late July. So maybe they are looking at games from the at the time recent 12th annual open 1984. But this with really quick finds without confirmation.

You may be right about Christiansen. I got my information about Tarjan being an editor from a comment at "thechessmind.net"

Yes, it's hard to remember what the pre-internet landscape looked like.  Getting good coverage of international chess every two weeks was like a gift from heaven.

There was a series of Players Chess News books. I don't know, but I would guess that they were bound volumes of the periodical.

US publication. Various contributors. I still have one of their year books in one of my bookcases. Tournament reports, news and games, plus opening articles.

I still have some copies of The International Players Chess News from 1984 to 1990. Their 5-year anniversary was in 1986, so it should have started in some form in 1981. There were two separate newspaper publications. One was "Games and Events" and the other was "Theory and Analysis".

Cool!

Thanks, guys, for all your input (and even scans! - I'm a sucker for scans).

I have never even heard that periodical mentioned... which struck me as odd.

But I did find some things out.

It was published from 1981 to 1986.
As GOP mentioned Rainer Rickford was indeed the publisher (the L.A. Chess Players Association) and the Editor-in-Chief was Larry Christiansen
James Tarjan became co-editor-in chief starting in June 1985.
Among the other editors (I'm guessing contributing editors) were John Danaldson and Vince McCambridge.  Jeremy Silman was a consulting editor.

It was pubished bi-weekly.
In January 1982, the name changed from Players Chess News to International Players Chess News.
The first issue was Aug. 1, 1981 and the last issue was Jan. 13, 1986

I don't know anything about IM Vince McCambridge, but the others are all familiar to me.

I played him once (at a People's Open...speaking of blasts from the past).

You've played a lot of old West Coast guys.
