Playing against "Mimics"

Definition of "mimic": to imitate closely

Strong players often recommend that you aim for imbalances in the opening. You can do this by adopting opening styles that are stylistically opposed to your opponent's.

For example: if they play classically, you can play hypermodern.

If they play hypermodern, you can play classically.

The goal is to avoid perfect symmetry, to keep the position dynamic and flexible. This tends to lead to interesting positions, with unique challenges for both players.

But there is a certain kind of player that makes this difficult: the mimic.

If you play something, they mirror it. As long as possible. Until they need to deviate.

Often this is an intentional defensive strategy; they'll wait to see what you play, then immediately will copy your move.

Game after game, they will repeat the tactic, for as long as they can.

What do you think of mimics?

And how do you choose to play against them?

Just make the best move you can. Nothing special. Symmetry will get broken at some point. like at the first check, for example.

Maybe a check or something! Though, only if the check helps your position.
