Playing Blindfold games

Chess is very fun and engaging, but something that still surprises me is watching people play blindfold.  The amount of visualization and memory required for that is very impressive.  I still have a hard time identifying each square without looking at the boundaries first, so I know I've got a long ways to go, but just the act of memorizing the board position is amazing.

I've tried doing simple things like moving two pieces around the board in my mind, to get used to visualizing game play, but even then the lines star to blur and it's hard to maintain focus.  Any tips other than practice makes perfect?

At first I thought it was just a way to show off, but actually being able to do this means you could probably be able to calculate 20 moves ahead very easily, because you've got a sample chessboard in your head to test out move sequences with
