Playing Chess High

wonder what poker players do to help them perform at their peak.

I play chess high often, and i would say it barelly matters in terms of strenght of playing, and there's even the chance it can help you. For instance, thought processes are certainly slowed down, but the ability cannabis has to relax and help someone concentrate on creative activities, can in fact change my own gameplay from tactical to more positional for example. If you get nervous with OTB games like i do, it might really calm you down and allow you to think straight and fearless.

Aside from this, i know plenty of chess players, even titled masters, that do smoke their own joint probably everyday and still handle to be grandmasters.

@ madness20: name some

Certainly it could be problematic to mention who since cannabis is somehow , forbidden,  in the recent anti-doping controls. But either way it'd wouldn't be hard to figure out, there's just about 3 portuguese grandmasters, it's certainly one of them, him and another IM that usually goes around to tournaments with him. How do i know? Simple, i've smoked with them during some tournament, i was outside making a joint with some other friends and they came to us and asked for some hits and we got to know each others ever since then.

Aside from him, i know a IM from my own town that is a known alcoholic and smoker and he's probably the most brilliant chess player in portugal, he's also part of national team. But this guy is so dependant that he actually needs it to maintain a certain level of normal, otherwise he's not entirelly functional. Still he's a great guy, a highly depressed guy but a true chess genius since young age, he's probably the closest at the moment of achieving the 4th gm title in portugal.

i find that i play better when im stoned because i don't get distracted with anything else but the game.

mcarballo10

i play elsewhere and they have this feature where you can see your stats and what I noticed was that every time my elo was at its highest were also the times I was high. But then again, my worst blunders were when I was stoned.

Bubble_man

I play much better stoned.

I have a tendency to go into auto pilot when sober, especially against weaker opponents or when I'm in a losing position. When stoned I use a lot more of my clock and it's reflected in my rating swings.

There lays a huge dilemma, I don't smoke often and don't want to, but I want to play my best possible chess!

I play worse if i'm stoned. A lot worse. Even worse than when i'm drunk.

BambooPursuit

I play horribly while stoned, horribly while drunk, horribly while drunk and stoned, and horribly while sober.

I find that while I'm obviously a more stupid person stoned, I can play at the same level while stoned. I usually need to play longer games, because I tend to have more trouble doing any type of deep thinking, but I tend to see good moves more often, and threats from my opponent more. I win about as often while stoned or not stoned....

I always drink when I play online chess and almost always win vs untitled players and score well against almost all players in general.  I suffer some performance issues if there's caffeine involved but alcohol is no issue.

Proof that you don't drink spirits, because they all contain caffeine. So are you a wine or beer drinker? I personally prefer spirits like rum, scotch, vodka, etc but I don't mind weaker tasting beers or moscato or chardonnay wine. All other wines imo are vomit inducing.

Weed is okay, I think. Works fine for games that require precision/frame perfect motor skills even. Main issue is that is lessens concentration. But I can't really play anything drunk, even under very slow time controls.

I started a similar thread a while back and the mod killed it for discussing illegal activities as ridiculous as that might seem

You're a young person that presumably wants to get a good job some time. A friendly word of advice, attaching your real name to drug or even alcohol use is not the way to go. All these heroes here are mostly anon which is the way to go. I used to drink and vape weed (but, actual real weed, not the toxic poison capsules) for a long time but have been 100% sober for over a year now and do not regret it. Embrace life and face it with courage, you won't regret it. Weed I remember is like dreaming, sure it is fun but you have to wake sometime and do something with your life.

Apparently, no one cares.

I've been smoking everyday for nearly 4 years (started Feb 2017, this was also the first time I ever tried it at the age of 21 and pretty much have smoked everyday since then unless I've ran out of money) and been playing chess on this site for around 10 days (around 14g a week). I think I'm still decent at chess as I beat all of my peers. It's made me realise I need to slow down a lot because I miss so much stuff or make stupid mistakes, even when I'm not stoned I will still struggle with deep thinking . I've come to the conclusion I'm going to slow down on maryjanes, not going to quit completely and hopefully lower it to a few games a week and stop trying my brain. This is my first year out of uni and during my last year in 2018-19 I noticed how much I was struggling with assignments etc but this didn't phase me I still smoked just as much, I really enjoy chess and its given me a bit of a wake-up call that I've been destroying my brain cells.
