It's never bad to play strong opponents.
But if that's all you do, you risk little to no practice in the following:
1) Punishing simple (simple at your level) mistakes (both tactical and otherwise). In fact 2000 players may make so few of these types of mistakes, you may develop the habit of not checking for them!
2) Maintaining an advantage and pushing for a win over many moves (winning against 2000 as a 1300 would likely only be after a huge mistake). In fact, you may be on the defensive so often, you develop a habit for passive, solid play.
I've seen it said that ideally when you play better players, you're able to win at least 25% of your games. Not that it's bad to play players who can beat you 99/100, but I would only do it occasionally.
Very nice comment!
On a good day I'm around 1500-1600 in rapid.
Is it a good idea or a bad idea to be playing against players rated 1900-2200?
Is there a point at which it would do more damage than good, re skill gap?
I expect to lose 80-90% of the games.
Just wondering if it can be damaging to improvement to be playing against significantly stronger opponents, against whom there is little chance of winning.
