Should one try to play openings according to general principles or know the theory of the modern openings.
I find that in openings like the French you cannot really play by intuition and you need to know what you are doing.
This is because it is not possible to develop the g8 knight and the c8 bishop.
These are two problem pieces.

Play the Classical French with an early Nf6. The Bc8 is used as a shells against backdoor checks. You don't need to castle and many times you can walk the king to the queen side.
