When you are playing live, either you or your opponent will have a + number down next to where it shows the pieces taken. what exactly does this mean ? It seems to have no effect on your ranking in any case, win lose or draw... so what the heck is it for ?

+ = Advantage for white.

- = Advantage for black.

For example.

+1.00 means white has a 1 pawn advantage.

-2.50 means black has a 2.5 pawn advantage.

Thank you IMBacon. I suppose that is a nifty feature.... other than the fact that a player can still mate in one move, regardless, hahaa wink.png

These are outdated ways to show how people thought decades ago before computer evaluations. The smaller the number the less important, but the writer of the article or annotation can feel superior with an inflated ego thinking they are the computer punching in those pluses and minuses.

The plus "number" (In specific) Was an ancient way to write the number 2 in Sumerian. With a cross for 2 lines. One line, obviously being the number one.

Thats talking about eval, if you're playing a game it means the points of material you're up. Does not account for mates. pawn = 1, bishop and knight = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9
