Poor Faustino

For anyone who hasn’t seen, bless him, Faustino Oro had a chance to break the record of youngest ever GM today. He has the rating, and two GM Norms, and could’ve clinched it with a win against his GM opponent today.

A win on demand against a 2600 GM is a hell of a tall order, so I hope he isn’t too surprised, but I can only imagine the stress and pressure that poor kid was under today, and it’s heartbreaking for him that he didn’t get it done.

He remains a truly generational talent, and I’m sure his career will be illustrious and long.

Oof! Would've been cool for Oro to break the record. But he'll be a GM soon enough, either way.

Carlsen wasn't the youngest GM either - but look how high he climbed.

#7 I am 13 myself and was his competitor

If you’re 13 then you’re already too old, the record is currently around 12y 4mths I believe.

There is nothing wrong with that. People are allowed to have opinions-though the internet would have you believe otherwise-I personally was indifferent, I really just play chess to play so no reason for me to care.

Being indifferent and actively rooting against a kid are two different things…

I believe he didn’t got the GM-Norm because he played in a closed tournament. But Fausti often said in interviews that he "Would just try to play his best", so he might not be so upset thab you think. Could be the case - Could also not be the case. He will be a GM for sure, he. is already at GM strength. And I believe, he will be one of the strongest online players on Chess.com since he started with online chess at a very early age. I wouldn’t even be surprised if he would eventually hit 3400 and then maybe break some records when he is older.

Oro at least traveled the world getting norms in different locations rather than staying in one spot cherry picking norms from the same group of players. FIDE changed the rules because of HOW Mishra got his gm title.

Also, I think getting norms in a swiss style event is much harder than in a round robin because as u get to the final few rounds in a rr ur likely to get opponents that have low scores and no motivation to win. Completely different mindset. So a player trying for norms can get easy wins because their opponents aren't trying as hard.

ah, unlucky for Faustino, but also good for his opps for not making it easy for him! As the going gets tough, the tough gets going

Haha indeed! Don’t think people become grandmasters by going easy on opponents
