Portland OR Casual Chess?
Hah! Finally I get in my comment before you!
Were our comments even about the same thing?

Now that you mention it, no.

the people that you are more likely to meet in the cafe to play chess are the ones who played at the club as well. So calling them " snobby geniuses" is not gonna help your case.

Just what Washington needs, another Californian!
Yes, it is just what Washington needs, as a matter of fact...and not just 1 but 2 of us (me & wife). Besides, it could be worse; we could be from Oregon!

Actually Vancouver is one of the best places to retire to, you get the benefit of no state income tax with a short trip across a bridge to purchase goods with no sales tax. I've spent a lot of time in the Portland/Vancouver area when I was delivering argon. I'd pass on living in the city and think about just east of Camas or a bit north up I-5. You get the benefit of being in the country yet still being close enough to life's necessities. You know, like Costco, Trader Joe's, malls, etc.
Okay, favourite Californian joke. I'll shorten it up though. A Frenchman, a Russian, a Oregonian, and a Californian are at a hunting camp in the evening around the campfire. The Frenchman pulls out a magnum of champagne, takes a swig, tosses the bottle in the air and shoots it. Surprised, everyone else asks why he did that. He replies, "In France, we have lots of champagne." Thenn the Russian does the same with a bottle of vodka. The Oregonian pulls out a bottle of microbrew, takes his swig, tosses the bottle in the air, pulls out his gun, shoots the Californian and catches the bottle before it hits the ground. Shocked, the others ask why he did that. He replies, "In Oregon we have lots of Californians and we get a nickel back for every bottle."

ahahhahaha man funny replies people! Im actually from california too, born and raised... hahah this along with the 'snobby geniuses' line isn't really gonna help me make some chess friends, but oh well i tried.
Now to add my 2 cents... portland has a bunch of strip clubs / cheap beer / dive bars / cheap living / packed with 20 - 30 year olds... I enjoy it. Much more practicle than living in the Bay. People actually can afford to live, eat, and go out to bars every weekend on a minimum wage job. (This isn't eating lobster n drinkin cristal every night)... But in that sence and that everything people call "cool" to do in portland is packed in bike friendly 5 mile radius, add nice rivers and forests 20 minutes in all directions... This makes Portland a great summer town. Ignore the hippy shit / 9 months of rain and I love this place.

They probably wouldn't get too angry about being called geniuses anyway. Is it easy to find a job in Portland?

fun fun games

At this point it sems like jobs are hard to find everywhere. And I guess with the rising popularity of that 'portlandia' show its kind of effecting pricing and interested in living here. I love it though, weather is kinda whack though
Anyone live in Portland OR? Preferably INNER portland? I am just starting to attemp to make a casual chess meeting. I love chess but I dont wanna drive all the way to the portland chess club and pay a fee to play with snobby geniuses... Id rather meet at a coffee shop or a bar and have a couple nice casual games with real pieces instead of this OTB stuff. Let me know!
