What are some good strategies to prevent an opponent from castling? I've had a recent match testing out one strategy. I also want to know how i did as far as preventing my opponet from castling.

It looks like it cost you a piece and you got absolutely nothing for it.

You should throw that baby out with the bath water.

Use your bishops wisely!

Bxf7+ just loses a piece for no reason at all. Bg5 also loses a piece to Nxf3+ followed by Qxg5.

Hi Alien905,

It looks like you face a common misunderstanding. Just because your opponent cannot castle, that does not mean that the game is over in your favor! Sacrificing a bishop (worth three points of material) for a pawn (worth one pawn of material) just to stop your opponent from not castling is often not worth it.

If you notice, at move 16 your opponent got a castling position by "castling by hand" as it's called.

That's true. I realized during the game sacrificing my bishop was a huge mistake but by then it was too late as my opponent already advanced his pieces.

Nxf3+ Qxf3 then Qxg5 is illegal.

Sometimes 1100s get it right!

Oh yeah that's true, my bad.

seems to me to be a cultural thing IMO. kind of like the rampant disconnecting, thinkin its going to magically give you more time on the clock. I just notice the same people from the same country doing this. Heck they might even be from the same barnyard.

I am not sure I've ever seen great romantic players like Paul Morphy or Frank Marshall sacrifice even a pawn to say "aha, now you can't castle."

They were more positional and just kept things difficult for their opponents. If anything, rather than making it illegal to castle, they often just made their opponents hesitate every single move whether or not they even had time to castle.
