Prize Money

I'm researching a series of tournaments - there were 7 altogether.  As with most tournaments there were prizes for  1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.  These were invitational tournaments, usually limited to 12 players. Starting at the 3rd tournament, besides the regular prizes, each player earned a set amount for each full point scored. Then starting in the 6th tournament, in which there were only 10 invitees, the participants voted to divide the total purse into 45 shares (there were 90 games to be played), The winner received a full share for that game and draws allowed the  players to split the share.  The tournament winner got possession of the trophy in addition.

I had ever seen this method of awarding cash prizes but it makes sense..... I think.

I've seen tournaments that award shares.  It's a weird system and it's usually used for small closed tournaments, the point being to discourage draws.  Usually anyone who achieves a certain number of points gets a certain number of shares, so in a five round event everyone with 3/5 gets X, 3.5 Y, 4 Z, etc.  But it only works for small events.  I've never seen one where people get a share based on the result in each game

This might not be precisely the same, but next month's Maryland Open will award prizes based on the player's score. In the open section, 5/5 wins $1500, 4.5/5 wins $800, and 4, 3.5, and 3 win $450, $175, and $50, respectively. If several players get the same score, each wins the stated amount. The same system, with lower prize amounts, applies to lower sections also.

If this is the beginning of a trend, I might someday bring home $20 for not utterly failing in the patzer section of an obscure local tournament.

Another interesting prize system.
The Monte Carlo tournaments at the turn of the 20th century used a different scoring system with draws counting as .25 pts.  I think mixing up the scoring and prize allotment systems can give a tournament an added dimension.

Thanks.
