Digital photos can include data that tells another computer which way is up. It's called EXIF data.
Yours evidently did.
So it would appear correctly on your device, but sideways on any device which didn't use that data.
You can edit photos to change their orientation

Do you mean edit them in Chess.com? I have not found an option for that.
No. You have to edit them using a photo editing program.
I did that to the second image that appears above. You can download it and use it to replace your sideways dog.
Will try this, but what would explain the picture showing correctly oriented in the chess.com app on the phone I took it withAND my new phone, but sideways in the chess.com app on my iPad?
