I never noticed that, but you're right: a good, general chess program definitely should allow a choice of promotion piece. Bluebush Chess also assumes the player wants a queen, although that program would allow a player to interrupt the game to edit the board. Chess Titans gives the player a choice of promotion piece, but doesn't allow the player to edit the board.
