Ohh....let me list the ways !
To start, he reminds me of a really smart, kinda nerdy, kid I went to school with (he was our most popular class #....brains are the sexiest thing u can't see !) who rode the bus....like one block.
He's from the Kingdom of Bohemia (I luv all things bohemienne !), he died at age 64....squares (ppl think BF was the first.....no), was our 1st undisputed WC, an absolutely fabulous theorist, & a proponent of the very essence of this thread.
He NEVER lost a game for 32 straight years !
He played ferocious, attacking chess, & @ times forwent defense for <3felt romantic comboventures. He was born poor, rose over everyone, died poor, & left a diminutive but handsomely, intact corpse.
He was faithfully married for many years, & in his romantic style, lost interest in chess after Caroline died in 1892 (losing to Lasker in 1894....they say he didn't care after Caroline). Following her death, he had a nervous breakdown then eventually married another. Pillows don't have a heart beat.
Chess was his life pursuit, tho' he realized he could not go on in earnest without Caroline.
And I find that, and him, eye-watering beautiful.

It doesn't make sense because pawns cannot move backwards and when its promoted it is on the edge of the board so it cannot capture other pieces, if it's stuck on the square the pawn would be useless, so nobody in their right mind will want to promote a pawn into a pawn.

only thing i can come up with right away,is if you can mate by promoting because the pawn opens a rook or check queen where the actual promotion piece is irrelevant.
Promoting a pawn to equal is such a beautiful thing that gawd forbid we wanna increase chess romanticism. :/
I agree, what if a pawn doesn't want to have voodoo done on him to turn him into a horse. What if doesn't want to change his gender into a queen? Why the hell would he want to turn into an inanimate object (rook)? What if he is not religious and doesn't want to become a bishop?
