How about some other pieces on the board.

1. before play starts, three additional pieces are placed on the board the player. (variation #1, opponent places pieces). These pieces are: "a block", "a pivot", and "queen for a day".

Block- place this pc on the board on any open square. this prevents any piece (variation #2 only opponents pieces) from moving thru this square except a knight.

Pivot- place this pc on the board on any open square. this allows one's own piece to land on this square and pivot to take an extra move. (ie: pivot pc at f4, then Bc1-f4-c7 check)

Queen for a Day- place this pc on any open square. this allows the piece that lands on this square the power of a queen for one move, then it reverts back to the original piece.

Suicidal Tendencies- at any time during the game a player may choose to kill off one of it's own, this would constitute a move. This can only be done one time.

my girlfriend thinks i have too much time on my hands.

it seems to me the seirawan chess is an attempt to overcome the limitations and restrictions in chess such as: pawns that get stuck and cant move backwards, bishops that only move on one color, knights that take too long to get from one position to another, stalemates and draws etc. adding the elephant and hawk would sure eliminate some of this but, isnt it the restrictions and limitations of chess the makes it challenging? want to make it more interesting, give the king more power so he can engage in the battle more and make it that much more diffilcult to checkmate him.

Giving a king more movement is an interesting thought, maybe 2 squares in any direction?  Though I still like the premise of Seirawan chess.

well i have played for 50 years and i still find the game stimulating and challenging

maybe thats because i still use my brain and dont rely on computers to tell me what to do.

eschew the machines and get back to enjoying the game sir

I agree, but I still think that adding a new variant such as Capablanca Chess makes

things even more intersting. And I'm not saying we should all stop playing Chess.

WHy not do both ?

When it gets to the point where on the opening move the other player announces mate in 37 no matter what I played, then it won't be fun anymore and something will have to be done.
