How is it that some players do not have to move at all for more than
than 5 minutes without an abandonment penalty ? I lost this game

He was in checkmate and let the clock roll for 5 minutes
I had 5 minutes left and didn’t realize he finally moved... it only gave me 30 seconds to make a move

Based on your description of the situation, it sounds like you were actually disconnected and when you finally got reconnected you saw the move your opponent had made previously.

Looking at the game in the archive would be able to show if that is what likely happened. But, as long as a game has made it past 19 moves and a player isn't disconnected, they can take as much time as they want on a move, up to the time left on the clock. Though, based on your second post, that isn't what happened.

Thanks for the intel!!! It looked like I was completely connected the whole time... it seemed like a dirty trick

So, should the recommendation be if you don't see a move by your opponent refresh the page?

TODAYisCHEESEday

But if you refresh your page, doesn't the connection come back if your internet connection is good?

I hate it when they have like 5 minutes left in a dead lost position and just let the clock run out. You have to wait doing nothing while they just hope you accidentally time out or get bored and leave. I always report them and several times I’ve gotten messages from chess.com that they took some action—probably a warning.

Sounds like you fell for a very simple trick. Next time keep an eye on the clock. Some people will let their clock run nearly empty in the hope you take focus off the game, and then will move at the last second so they can claim victory when you time out.

I stall every game for years. ive never been contacted about it despite players complaining about me all the time

question. why stall?

TheCalculatorKid

I reported someone yesterday. I had then in a forced mate from 26 minutes and they ran the clock, all the way down to 0.

for some reason I read that as "forced mate in 26 moves" and was very suspicious about your calculation abilities lol

I just got done playing a blitz game. Person stopped once it was seen he/she would lose. I waited 2 minutes.

I think this is the first time for me reporting for stalling.

2 minutes out of 3 minutes is a high proportion.

nonono, the man was obviously in deep thought. He simply forgot about the 3 minute time limit

So you were being a hypocrite?
