Puzzle rating, bug?

Hi everyone, hope you’re all doing well!

Lately, I’ve been spending a lot of time on puzzles. Even though my game ratings are around 400 (5-min) and 600 (10-min), my puzzle rating is 2600. For example, I managed a 30-puzzle streak today.

However, I’ve noticed that the puzzles I get range from about 1500 to 2200 in difficulty, which feels quite random. Is there any way to make the puzzles closer to my actual rating of 2600, and less random rating??

Thanks in advance!

You would expect to get over 2000 rated puzzles if you're a over 2000 rated player, but sadly no 😅

I'm in the same rating range & I usually get 400-1600 rated puzzles, only rarely above that, the hard ones I usually get right, it's the low rated that are difficult to me sometimes because I think too complicated and it is annoying to fail because the goal was to get the rook instead of doing a checkmate etc. It's only afterwards I can see it was a low rated one and the goals/categories are never showing either while doing the puzzles (I don't know if it's because of using only mobile).

People who are saying that it is easier to get a high rating nowadays, this is not true for everyone. People who excel at high rated puzzles and fail with lower ones are struggling also because of frustration for not getting the level of puzzles they deserve at a higher level, it just feels degrading and pointless. You all who are saying that probably wouldn't even have wanted to get a good rating this way. Even crazier when I was under 2000 I used to get over 2000 rated puzzles more, I got a lot of elo then from getting more than +5 from many puzzles. It is all backwards.

So now when I get a frustrating puzzle I go do (unrated) custom categorized ones that are over 2000 not to feel frustrated & to learn something about what I'm actually doing (memorizing puzzles by category + learning the terminology). If enough people turn to custom ones the developers must take notice and change the system so that over 2000 rated players will get over 2000 rated ones instead of lower. Because the points system is more addictive and companies rely on addicted people, not those who only use the app occasionally and therefore don't need a payed subscription.

Let's assume that this system is designed to be this way and not a bug. What could be the reason for this? I'm thinking that it could be a well known marketing strategy: selling to unhappy people who are never satisfied with their accomplishments because of how they got there etc. in this example people are getting high ratings for doing mostly low rated puzzles and never feeling good enough or like they deserved it so they keep doing more to prove their worth. If u got a high rating & feel deserving of it u don't really need to prove anything more. Unhappy people tend to buy things and services. It's our responsibility as customers to recognize the marketing strategies, those can be changed if people become smarter together and demand change.

But yeah it could also be a bug, but I doubt it 😅 I would be happy if the system would change, that is the problem if unhappiness is the goal. Perhaps there will be a chess app in the future that concentrates on mental health, addiction prevention and actually helping people instead of frustrating them.

Yeah, thank you for your long input.
Not sure if it is a bug, I would assume it was designed that way.
But that rises the same question, why?
Anyways, my rating in games with 5 or 10 minutes, never changed.
I had 0 rating in puzzles, now I have 2600 and my elo never went up..
So puzzles at the end, is just a fun way to pass time, not sure if they can improve your game.

Sorry I probably write too long...

They must have marketing specialists that have designed the system to be like this.

I can't see the puzzle id's or the category in stats (unless custom ones). I would like to see the amount of times a particular puzzle has showed up. There doesn't seem to be a way to stop the reappearance of same puzzles with a simple "don't repeat this" button next to the completed puzzles for example. It would make the experience much more pleasant if there was an opportunity to prevent repetition. But that aspect must be important for some reason like creating an addictive pattern & not having to add so many new ones when old ones keep coming again.

There are a lot of talented puzzle makers here among the players that could be used to make new ones instead of using the old over and over. It would be cool for people to see their puzzles in the lineup. I really hope they will change the system.

Puzzles & games are 2 different things. Not really comparable. Because the same situations rarely happen. Sometimes I have won because I recognized the situation from puzzles, but lesson challenges have been far more useful. Also with explaining the situations from puzzles. The most helpful method would probably be doing lesson challenges & then searching the category from custom puzzles to enhance learning.

Yeah, not sure if that was designed by marketers.
I have a friend that has 2100 rating, but his puzzles shows 80% of the time 2000+ but he played 15k puzzles and have 1.6m points.
Not sure if that is relevant but might be

I asked a 2500 GM: "What is the best way to study tactics?"

He said it will depend on your goals. Do you want a high puzzle rating or do you want to improve? If you just want a high puzzle rating then just keep doing difficult puzzle and through sheer repetition and memory you will attain a high puzzle rating, but you will not improve your chess ability.

If you are serious about improvement? If you are a class player (which I am). Start with the basics. Either book or online. Set up the tactic and try and figure out what the motif is, what caused the weakness in the position (Which is why playing through the entire game is very helpful), look at ALL forcing moves, calculate out each line as far as you can. Then once you have done that and solved it. Now turn the board around and look for tactics from the other side. Use your same thought process that you use in a game as you would when doing tactics.

Im at my USCF rating floor of 1600. My tactics rating here is 2800. Does that mean im a 2800 player? Of course not. Does that mean I can create 2800 rated tactics? Not even close. Does that mean I will find 2800 rated tactics in my games? Again, not even close.

The puzzle ratings you're seeing in the UI are not the ratings being used for the puzzle selection algorithm. All puzzles have been re-rated on the backend. There's work being done to bring the new ratings to the UI.

If you're finding the puzzles too easy, try changing the puzzle Difficulty setting to Hard or Extra Hard

FUnny fact, I know 2400 player that instructed me to play puzzles everyday as this is the wayt o improve, maybe there is no perfect way. As long as you improve.

Bingo! As long as it brings you improvement and or joy to the game that's what counts.

It seems that using the extra hard, you will always have the same puzzle rating you have or higher, its a new tool as it shows in the SS

Not exactly but it should give higher average puzzle ratings, on average.

Thank you very much! I was beginning to be beyond frustrated with the standard ones 😅 As u might have noticed.

I pushed the word standard on my mobile and it opened up the sub selections. I honestly thought that the other selections that have been mentioned were not available on mobile because the text didn't look like it had a link on it & no arrow etc. indication that it could be changed. But now I changed it to hard. I try extra hard later. Still I don't want to get the repetitive puzzles. So I'm going to focus more on lessons & custom ones + rapid.

My current goal is to get 500 in rapid. After analyzing my past games I particularly have to work on my endgame, my least favorite part of chess... It's more fun to checkmate in middle game if possible. I've gone through basic & advanced endgame lessons. The mating net & zugzwang seems complicated, but I will practice on the zugzwang in custom section of puzzles.

Yeah, amazing.
Now I am getting 2200, 2300 puzzles that I never had before.
Uhuuuuu!!!!

Avatar of DareTower
That sounds great!!! :) Did u put it on extra hard? After switching to hard I got a 1200+ rated 3/3 moves new one that was pretty easy for me to get right. Hard does not seem hard. But I will keep it on for the week & see what happens... Perhaps there will be some challenge. But at least it was a fun new puzzle that matched my logic.
Avatar of DareTower
The second one was 800+ puzzle, way too easy to be on hard setting 😑 I will not go trough this nonsense any longer. I will go directly to extra hard!
Avatar of DareTower
On extra hard the puzzles have been over 1000, but under 2000, that is disappointing, but partially happy if no under 1000 annoying ones. At least fun new ones so far, no repetition. Still easy, gotten all right. I recognize these type of Zwizchenzug situations because I have been learning about them in lessions. I'm done with puzzles for Today. Will probably do more another day (hopefully getting over 2000 rated then).

I can see a lot of people have been taken by the dependence from games like chess or smtg like that. This chat makes me see that! Poor us and poor you! 🤮
