Hello,

My puzzle rating went from 1514 one day to low 1200s within five days. What am I doing wrong? What should I try?

Just like playing normal games, rating fluctuation will happen over your chess career.  You will have big win streaks and big loss streaks.

The only piece of advice I can give is to make sure you don't spend too long of sessions at one time for puzzles.  Make sure to take breaks!  Some days we just have a hard time focusing and seeing the moves.

My puzzle rating began to improve after I got through some books on tactics in Chessable. Books like Common Chess Patterns helped me a lot. I don’t fluctuate that much because I know enough chess patterns which are not easy to find if you didn’t have a specific training. My goal is this year is to reach 2200. I am around 2050 know, with a peak of 2070.

An update. I did some puzzles today and went immediately over 2100 for the first time. In some days the exercises seem to be very easy.

Before you chose a move when doing a puzzle don’t forget to spend enough time to be sure that the candidate move is probably the right one. Sometimes I don’t have the right mindset and play to quickly. It is essential not to chose a move without seeing the end of the sequence. Ok, there are also puzzles in which you don’t have to know the whole sequence because you can exclude other candidates. But it is good to see a sequence of moves instead only the candidate.

Thank you both very much. This is helpful advice and encouraging.
