ok i know this isint a controversial forum where you can argue, nor is it something about a beginner needing help, but i really want to know

when do you play Qa5 over Qb6 in the fully accepted benko?!

Qa5 for sure
Sea_TurtIe

yeah but the ideas of a4 and Bd2 are quite annoying for black, compared to Qb6 avoiding that. which is why i made this forum to see which is better and why

Our own chess.com member Pogo (WGM Natalia Pogonina) plays (or played?) the Benko regularly. Here's a list of her games in that line:

From what I remember I always went Qa5. It's the "newer" move IIRC... either way black can be put under a lot of pressure if white knows tons of theory, but I remember Qa5 being more appealing... it's been a few years so I don't remember specifics, sorry tongue.png

Be sure to look at high level games to see how things play out. Some advantages aren't something a human can hope to use. By looking at games you can see how strong human players attempted to push their position to a win.

Haha, you're so used to trash topics I guess.

Just so you know, topics like this are often commented on by high rated players when you post in the opening section.

yeah but then you get issues like this

blueemu

Having put the Queen on a5 early in the game, there's nothing wrong with moving it again later on, after it has served its purpose on a5. It can even fall back all the way to d8, after the f8-Rook has moved across to b8.

After all... once the Black Queen leaves a5, it isn't as if the White Bishop on d2 is brilliantly placed.

Sea_TurtIe

yeah but wouldint it be better placed on b6 where it pressures b2???

in the Qb6 variation black wont have to do a bunch of queen moves

thatswan

is benko good

Sea_TurtIe

its quite good as black gets great pressure and counterplay on the queenside, sure white gets a pawn but blacks pressure lasts even until the endgame

Sea_TurtIe

the only annoying part is having to learn the declined benkos so you dont just fall apart

learning the declined benkos requires knowledge on the benoni and kid aswell

Yeah, and most people decline it one way or another... and like you said there are many different ways.

Qb6 is Playable in that position.
