Everyone knows the "ladder mate", which has gone by other names before YouTube. But, if your opponent will not resign when you get a second queen, you should show some technique and deliver checkmate in the middle of the board.
At a youth tournament that I ran on Saturday, there was a draw by repetition as one player had a lone king on the fifth rank. The other had queens on the fourth and sixth ranks. One of the queens shuffled back and forth giving check while the poor king shuffled out of check.
First exercise:
Compose a position with White queens on the fourth and sixth ranks and a Black king on the fifth. White's king is the only other piece on the board. Make it mate in three.
The exercise is impossible. It is always mate in two or less. The first move is not check.
Second exercise:
Compose a position with two White queens and the two kings that is mate in four. It is harder than you would think. Teams of young students worked at this exercise in my summer camp a few years ago. They succeeded after 30 minutes. Mate in five is not possible. Four is the maximum. Prove me wrong.
