For some odd reason i view every tactic as a mate.  And when i cant find a mate, i have a horrible time trying to refocus, and look for the best move.

Does anyone else have this problem, or is it just me?

Does anyone have any advice how to fix this?

You have to stop looking at women this way.  Don't always be thinking of mating them.  They view that as a turn off.  Building incremental positional advantages first, FIRST!, will help in achieving your ultimate goal of mate.

I have the same problem, but finding the best move can be elusive. Once I started a 3 move mate and got dinged because there was a tricky 2 move mate.

Then I get dinged for spotting a fork that gives me a rook, when there was a mating net available.

My best way to handle TT is to look at the setup and if no clear check is available, then I assume it's a material gain, rather than mate.

Count material. You may win a rook for a knight or even for free but that isn't a winning move if you were already down significant material. To my knowledge there is only 1 winning first move in each TT problem.

Counting material wastes valuable time, when looking for possible checks can eliminate (in 99% of the cases) all mating nets. Then you assume (not count) it is material gain. The one exception to this, which is one of my strong suits., is en passant. If the opposing pawn advances past yours it;s almost a given en passant is the move. After you capture the pawn you can look and figure out why. I am still working on what to look for first in material gain. Is the Queen vulnerable? Can the knights fork? Can the bishops fork? Are any pieces hung? Finally can you trade for a material gain? Wait... one more thing to look for.  Are you in trouble and what is the best escape?
