Question Regarding Clock In Live Chess

Hello Everyone,

I have a question with regards to the clock in a live chess game. Recently I played a match against a friend and we were using a clock with a basic 5 minutes each player setting. We were near the end of the game with each of us having about 15 seconds left and it was his turn. He made a move and hit the clock. However, it was an illegal move(he put himself in check) so I pointed it out to him then he made another illegal move and I pointed it out again. By the time he actually moved my clock had run out and he was adamant that he had won and that I should have hit the clock as soon as I noticed it was an illegal move. Needless to say, I was dumbfounded because I felt I shouldn't be punished since I didn't do anything wrong. Can someone please explain to me the rules regarding an illegal move and the clock?

Thank you for reading,

Well let's say hypothetically that I was one move away from check mate and I had one second left and this happened, it would at least take me a second or two to realize what happened and hit the clock for him and thus lose without making my move. I don't see how that makes any sense.
