Question; why do so few people visit online blogs

Curious about this; why do so few people visit online blogs (such as those on .blogspot.com and .wordpress.com)

I had some guesses--

is it because....

A) you don't know of the good blogs on those sites; and/or you see so many that are not longer active.

True.  on the other hand not EVERYone who is on blogspot, etc is active.  and most guys (such as myself with an active blog; have links to other active blogs...

B) you prefer blogs here in chess.com.  True 'dat.  on the other hand, chess.com does not allow people to have links to other active bloggers- and thus updated blogs tend to be hard to find.  there's ALOT of people here.

C) it is insufferable listening to weak patzers talk about chess when they barely know anything about chess and are in no position to teach/or instruct.

good point. on the other hand- you still here those guys ramble on.

D) Tl;dr.  enuf said.

E) Its fun watching people fight it out here on the chess.com forums.  People are TOO polite, even in comments.

I guess... it is wierldy enjoyable being called a moron and calling people morons and idiots.  I'm not much of a troll though.  I usually try to be polite and respectful...

so BORING.

tl;dr. I know. ok, No long answers then :).   of course if you want to answer in details I will read it.  other kids , though, we probably not....

Thank you Paul.  wow you have an active blog!  I find it challenging to write more than once a week.  Ziryab I think also has an active blog on blogspot- your blogs are similar in content I think...

you'll will notice that I keep alot of analysis out of it.  the point isn't to make it a part of my improvement program- so much as to reason through my attitude, both about my program and my game.  This isn't typical.  I can't exactly figure out if it makes my blog wierd, boring, or different. (or all the above).

but still your blog is well done, ty- I will wander in their from time to time.

A number of reasons: 1) the vast majority of blogs suck; 2) most people can't write worth a damn; 3) if not #1 and/or #2, then they are poorly advertised, partly due to the e-incompetence of the blogger, who doesn't know how to increase his or her visibility; and 4) there are only slightly more people who can read than write, so those people with a very slow and superficial ability to read tend to do stuff with pictures or audio, like FB, pinterest, youtube, etc., to get their information.

There are some other reasons I can think of, but they tend to feed into the above somehow, e.g., people who can read get tired of sifting through garbage blogs, subsequently ceasing to do so, because it (i.e., the search for things never found, such as valuable information via a blog) wastes lots of precious time.  I am being a little cynical, of course, but there is much truth in that cynicality.

@bb gum,you one of our most frequent posters (and I LOVE your posts) and you often put forward your thoughts even when its clear that your more talented than the trolls that frequent these forums....

brankly, usually the forums have little instructional value- and when it does- usually a fight breaks out LOL.

so why visit the forums?  is it the drama?   I imagined it was the chance to help someone and for them to add something that might help you as well... and thats every bit as possible on a blog as the forums. (and usually more since there's less trolls)

- its ok to not get into blogs.  every blogger knows it more a labor of love and self expression.  if your not famous enough to write a book...

@milliern.  guilty as charged.  I know sometimes my writing is embarassing.

Time has changed the blogosphere recently.  some of the people writing are pretty good.  Dana Mckensie is a favorite blog of mine and a very strong and succinct chess player. http://www.danamackenzie.com/blog/?p=3776

for me, I will offer my own criticism of both blogs AND forums.  I spend too much time at both! tactical puzzles, annotated games, or one of several good books are far more instructive.

thanks to those that participated.

You were never charged, but knowingly self-incriminating is admirable. Wink

On another note, have you been playing any OTB USCF chess?  Are you improving?

Content production without editorial control is either hit or miss. I have no time to spend surfing through tons of narcissistic output of dubious quality.

Exactly what I said.  Thanks for substantiating my remark.

To know what blogs are worth to read there is the section of Top Bloggers. In any way only this blogs are good, there are some others that have great material, but it's a start. I think that almost everyone of the Top Bloggers have something valuable to say (they have different public, so you have to find what are right for you). I have one if you like you search :)

No, I can't really commit to OTB USCF chess... there's not time in my life for that.  BUT. I truly believe I AM improving.  all my ratings here are on the rise (except for "online", I brought that up earlier in the year).

Then, speaking of blogs, you need to read my post on ThisisChesstiny's blog post: http://becomingachessmaster.com/about/becoming-a-chess-master-introduction/

batgirl

thegreat_patzer, had you ever heard of Walter Grombacher, the Immortal Patzer?

bb_gum234 - "The only reason I'd want to visit a blog regularly is for instructional value."
You wouldn't visit a blog regularly for noninstructional content of value?

lol, way to squeeze a tautology out of it. Do you happen to write often? Have you ever considered blogging?

Nah. I'd be lousy at it.

A vast majority of blogs are vain, conceited, narcissistic - and lots of content pure plagiarism. Why look for them when there's plenty of this in the real world every day?

I've picked some blogs because of one or two generous and funny posts, and asked for alerts. Disappointed most of the time.

The only author I always find instructive+interesting+generous+entertaining/funny with honest knowledge is GM Bryan Smith.

thegreat_patzer

@batgirl.

I've never heard of Wlater Grombacher; the immortal patzer.   I thought it was bold enough to be called the Great patzer.  and now there is an immortal patzer?

is the "Great and All power patzer of amateurs", also an availabe nickname?  it would suck though as username. too long!

I'll look into this immortal patzer guy- he sounds like a guy I would appreciate.  perhaps he's related NN.lol.

thegreat_patzer

I still think most of you guys are missing my point.  All these "narcisstic, uninstructive, conceited, arrogant, poorly written" stuff very Much applies to all the forums... and yet Here we are.

the biggest thing I know the forum has (that a blog rarely has) is drama.  fights, catcalls, insults... the forum is good for picking up every troll and loudmouth.

if those posts aren't Uninstructive, than I don't know what the word means.   at any rate,  I like blogging.  I know its probably painful to read my stuff; just about as bad as the backyard professer probably.

but saying all this stuff in a blog keeps me thinking about my chess game and my chess improvement.  thanks for the comments.
