Because you play against weaker players. It is higher achievement for them to win then it it is for you. So you lose more then you would gain. If you play against higher rated players then you would gain more if you win then if you lose. Only when playing against an opponent of equal strenght you would have the same amount.
Question?

yeah i think if u want to boost your ratings do NOT play low rated players like me...if you play enough high rated players you are bound to get lucky sooner or later.

Well boost of rating comes only if you increase your skill.

Thanks for your replies.
I was playing against higher rated players, but I kept getting thrashed, so I set the rating limit to just a few points above mine. I thought I'd try and push up my rating the more practice I got, and then up the limit a bit more etc etc. and see how I got on. But I just can't see to break through the 1000 and stay there.
I suppose I'll just have to try harder.
You know, I'm not a competitive person at all, I'm very laid back and I certainly never swear .. until I joined Chess.com, that is!!
Is this common?
How come when I lose a game, I lose more points than I get if I win? (If that makes sense)
eg: I can play and win, and gain .. say - 7 points, but when I lose, my rating drops say .. 9 points.
It's like I'm always taking one step forward and two steps back all the time.
It's ever so frustrating.
