Sometimes I accidently click a time I don't want.. I never do it because someone chooses an opening I'm not comfortable with, which imo is cheap. Perhaps making it 3 Aborts an hour or something lower would be fine to account for accidents.
Quitting before first move - should it be a loss?

No, it shouldn't be a loss, the reason is simple, its true that some players never play as black pieces, normally they are not very high rated but sometimes happen that the internet connection is bad, and thanks to that you lose 15 seconds of your time, in blitz or bullet games this is really important, in 3 min games or 1 min games this is a lot, sometimes happen to me and I prefer to abort, to me it doesn't matter if I am playing white or black, but it matters if I lose some time thanks to my poor internet, thats why it shouldn't be a loss.
This seems like the most legitimate reason, since the slow connection is an aspect of the game that is not accounted for in "standard" rules so some accommodation is made in the online version. However, I don't think that this is the most common reason as when my opponent aborts without moving, it is usually within 1 or 2 seconds of my first move as white, or even before I make my first move. They would therefore still have a full clock.

Another possible good reason. I suppose it is easier to accidentally click a button then formally accept a real world challenge, justifying a need for a more forgiving allowance to abort games.

When you abandon a game you normally end up playing the same color you would have the last game. I abandon games because so and so plays an opening i'm not interesting in playing. As in a 30 minute game and one were to play b4 I would abort because i'm interested in a serious opening and game. If you abort a game too many times it eventually costs you rating to abort and you lose that game. There is a system in place to prevent abuse and even if it did somehow give a person an edge then with thousands of people playing at once I hardly think it's very effective. People lose as white as well.
WHAT, u can't even defend against b4! LOL
And how did you get that I can't play against b4 out of that? I said I would much rather play an actually enjoyable game from e4/d4. Work on your reading skills.
WTF? People can play whatever opening they want. Ur gonna decide what openings people are allowed. So u abort in any opening other than d4/e4. So immature and pathetic
It's online chess. I don't have to play against an opening that isn't serious. Just out of preference I would rather prepare for something more common in real life games. How is my aborting a game limiting the way someone else plays? Your logic is flawed. Find something else to argue about.
1st of all, in real life, people will play unique, different openings, ones they like, gambits..etc, not always d4 or e4.
2nd, b4 is a real opening. In fact, most 1st moves ARE a legitimate opening. Theres b3, Larsen opening, c4 English, f4 birds. Top players play these openings
3rd, just a suggestion, good idea to get experience with all different kinds of openings so ur able to play well in all different types of games. Also saves time waiting for matches

yeah, aborting is so annoying as it wastes everyone time just so some guy can play the perfect opening

WHAT, u can't even defend against b4! LOL
Doesn’t sound like much of a warrior to me HeHe.

An online game is not the same as a tournament game. If you fail to show up to play a tournament game, your opponent wins by forfeiture. If your opponent fails to make a move in a casual online game, it may be because he has a connection issue or inadvertently clicked "play." You shouldn't be credited with a win. If your opponent has a connection issue or regrets starting the game after he moves, that's on him and you should get the win if he aborts. If some players abort when they are assigned black, there is an easy solution to that problem (and it may be the site's policy): they should automatically get black in their next game.

abandoning a game before the first move is not only because getting black. it’s meanly due to avoiding cheaters.lets say you facing 1900 rapid player with below 1000 blitz rating and tactic trainer below 1000 ,this is typical cheaters ,so i abort the game regardless of the color. i personally abort when there is 600 gap with 1800+players ,500 with 1700 and 1600 and below i play regardless(unless the gap ridiculous high, more then 1000 point)

That's interesting. I just play the game. It never occurred to me to check my opponent's profile before deciding to play or not. I don't worry about cheaters. It's just a casual game whether it's rated or not. I'm sure some cheat in casual games but it's silly. It defeats the purpose of playing. There's no prize money. Cheating will increase one's rating but if your rating comes from cheating, it's meaningless.

I see both sides.
I don't abort but sometimes have a bad mouse drop; when that happens I just resign.
What's the big deal? Nobody is paying you for your rating points.
Also, I'm not a mathematician but it seems that if you lose rating points your lower rating will make it easier to get them back.

you thinks is about rating points? i can care less about rating points(today i had 9 loses streak and it doesn’t bother me at all) the reason cheating does bother me:
1.the energy and time i put in the game, all goes for nothing it doesn’t matter how hard i try i can never beat an engine, its like if a human race a motorcycle.its stealing of time and energy.
- getting cheated is a bad feeling by it self.like if you go to the park to play basketball and someone cheat you, let say he change the score of the game.does is it feel to you ok? there is no rating points or anything, tho most people would care maybe you don’t..
- when playing an engine there is no interesting game or any fun, it just struggle you like anaconda.you basicly suffer,
- there are too many of them, last month along i got 4 members banned and i report only premium member(when i make cheaters loss money, it worth my time report them)

5. just losing.

If you got four members banned in a month, evidently you know how to detect cheating. How do you do it?

I think that the preventative measures Chess.com has in place are working quite well.
Each player is tracked by Chess.com, which notes how many times they aborted, and when it happened. If it happens too many times, the player loses the privilege to abort.
If the amount of aborts needed to have the button removed is increased, then there will be an increase in the amount of people abusing the system.
If the amount of aborts needed to have the button removed is decreased, then many innocent players will suffer. Let's say a doorbell rings, or you are reminded of a chore/appointment. In that rare case, having an abort button can be very beneficial.
As for @WarriorManners' post, any opening can lead to a serious game. For instance, when I play a3 on the first move I am merely trying to avoid theory and often the game develops into a complex positional struggle only a few moves in, which definitely counts as a "serious" game.

you will find a lot of info about cheating detection. in this topic you can find the method i use https://www.chess.com/clubs/forum/view/how-to-checkmate-a-cheater-in-3-moves

Thanks. I submitted my request.
Abandoning a game before the first move is a cheap way to avoid playing as black. Is there a good reason for this not resulting a loss? Surely accepting a challenge is a commitment as much as moving a piece. I'm not an expert in chess match rules, so if someone could give me an analogy to "real world" physical matches, I'd appreciate it. I haven't joined as a paying member specifically because of this lack of enforcement. Sure, the folks at chess.com say they restrict players who do this often, but that is between them and the other player. I was still slighted and should receive a victory for my opponent failing to "show up".
how do you really know that they left the game 'cause they won't playing as black?
True, I don't know this for a fact. But in over 2400 blitz games my opponent aborts almost exclusively when I am playing the white pieces. Coincidence? Perhaps, but if there is a trout in the milk, and the milk is spoiled, I'm blaming the trout.
