I don't know what the microphone is all about, unless you are in a high school cafeteria and trying to be cool with your buddies for superficial reasons.
If you are at a club, I would say saying "checkmate" is out of the question. Depending on the level of the player, they might be using it as training grounds for tournament play. In that case, saying "check" might be useful and later dropped when they get experience.
A more practical thing to do would be to record moves and instead of saying anything you put "+" or "#". If the person needs a cue, show them the scoresheet.

Is it considered cheesy these days to actually say checkmate?
I haven't been to a tournament or know how clubs handle this. Is it typical for someone to say "checkmate" when they win, or do they say "mate", or "that's the game", or, is it usually so obvious no one needs to say anything?
