You didn't embarrass yourself.
You played pretty well.

TY very Much!

The GM avoided hardcore opening theory by playing the English, then he quickly got an advantage on the queenside and never relinquished it.

Yeah. I lost the game mainly because of the queenside. I wonder what would of happened if I was white and i dragged him into an opening with tons of theory lol

I don't think he would allow himself to be dragged into a theoretical battle with a much lower rated opponent who may be very booked up on that line.
He would probably head for uncharted waters no matter what you did.

Yeah he probably would of. At the very least I spent my black on this game and next round I'll have white tongue.png (Hopefully)

urk
I don't know if White is even an advantage these days.

I had the honor of getting crushed by a GM in a tournament also. I tried.....
Strangemover

You fought well but he had sharper claws gg

Thx everyone lol

You sound so pessimistic, I'm always happy to play a GM (or other titled player). I see it as a 100% positive experience for the lower rated player.

His move 23.Rxc5 is nice. It's the kind of move I would miss, but wish I would find often. Simple and strong as long as you're able to notice it and are willing to calculate it.

I mean... I guess so. It looked more like black running away from theory to me though. And 6...Nf6 might indicate black is already totally guessing at that point.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with 6...Nf6.
It's just a KID vs an English.

And I don't see why 8....a5 9. b5 Nd4 is so bad either since White is slowed down in getting in c5.

6...Nf6 makes it pretty like a KID picture, but that doesn't mean it makes sense in the position. 6...Nge7 does everything 6...Nf6 does except block the bishop and f pawn. 6...Nf6, to me, is a move a player makes when they're just guessing without a thought in their head. I'm surprised OP says he's rated as high as 2000, but I'm guessing he's just a kid, who relies on calculation and tactics without understanding some of the basic logic that goes on during a game.

I agree there's nothing wrong with it, it just shows how much he wasn't thinking.

Just my impression.

Wow you're sounding dogmatic, Quinn.
6...Nf6 is more aggressive because there's a future ...Nh5 and ...f5-f4.

Black has won thousands of these games.

Eh, I agree f4 is a break, I'm not sure it's the best one or if you can go for it immediately. but if that's what black wants then Nc6 looks misplaced running into d4-d5 or b4-b5. Also starting with 6...f5 prevents 7.d4

There's nothing wrong with what you said, it just looks like black making some stock developing moves then afterwards looking around for something to do instead of developing with a purpose.

In my database, sorting by black's rating after 6...Nf6 and opening the top 5 games (where white didn't play 7.d4) and scroll through quickly, none of them played Nh5 much less f5 or f4. I won't claim to know why, this was just my instinct after all. Sometimes my impression is totally wrong, but it seems here maybe not so much.
