I watched one of Radja’s streams that I think is referenced as his apology. In that video he never apologizes at all. He does say that he was joking.

Not radjabov's fault that a part of chess community is too dumb to understand jokes

THIS!!! Finally someone who understands! Equality isn't a threat. Its just common decency.

Indeed, it’s like complaining about someone raising money for cancer research with the argument that there are other illnesses. So I’m not impressed with Grischuk’s “All lives matter”

this gender bender hypocrisy has gone on far too long. you have famous celebrities saying they are not male or female but non-binary and complaining when they are restricted from using certain restrooms in public. then a whole generation of children and teens who are capabel of being easily influenced and blindly following these social media stars and acting like the world owes them something and displaying horrific attitudes of being entitled and spoiled. this is truly the downfall of modern civilized society.

Every whiny person who has ever lived in the last trillion years has said the same thing.

Society is much more resilient than your delicate sensibilities.

But u did advocate for better treatment of the minorities compared to the white guy...

Oh ok, i apologize for misunderstanding your comment.

I agree with rajadov and grishuk. Grishuk is not talking about treatment but lives. Rajadov is talking about treatment which he felt was bias.

I don’t think anyone ever considered Grischuk or Radjabov to be bad persons with ill intentions of any sort, but maybe well known elite players and family men should think once or twice before stating certain things. Is it really funny if I call a player of Chinese descent Ching Chong? Do I have to bring up the Botez sisters and their looks so often, and say that I look at them muted while I don’t follow Sopiko because she is like a sister? Can I say something nice instead? Do I have to show that clearly in public that I don’t like what Black Lives Matter stands for? Can I understand their perspective better or avoid advertising my own view in case it could turn out that my way of seeing things is a bit limited?

Chess.com stands firmly against racism and police brutality. Black Lives Matter. We support this campaign as a reminder to those who forget or neglect it.

---------------------

People are welcome to say "All Lives Matter" in the sense that black lives matter as much as every other life. However, to use it a manner that implies that the Black Lives Matter movement is racist and does not value white lives as well is unacceptable, and any posts along those lines will be deleted. As this is unfortunately the most common use of the "All Lives Matter" phrase, any instances of that phrase alone without context or qualifiers will also be deleted.

In reviewing earlier posts in this thread, I have also deleted posts from @UrkedCrow and various responses to his statements.

Thanks!

When famous people state things in public they also do influence others quite a bit. Almost all the YouTube comments on the Radjabov Botez thing support him. If a top player says that he thinks it is great that there is so much chess content out there and that Botez is making the chess interest grow, people would also agree. If a top player suggests that women are to be looked at rather than listened to, he may well be honest about how he feels, but one can also wonder about the necessity of stating such things in public :-)

Well ask yourself this, is he wrong? be honest with yourself. Botez sister' main attraction is not chess but rather weird entertainment which is honestly not even funny.  Also they are beautiful which i think is a big reason for the popularity

Also one more thing, saying what is correct went out of fashion somewhere in the last decade, however now just being honest and not caring if people get offended is coming back in style.  You will have to wait for the next time in the course of humanity when speaking the truth goes out of fashion and people's feelings are more important than honesty and jokes

Also i don't think you realize this but sopiko's comment was a joke. A lot of girls like honest, brutal humor and many won't find such a joke offensive and it wasn't even "brutal". People who get offended over this live the most sheltered lives in history

I don't think it's just about speaking the truth and not caring if people get offended. Botez is good looking, and that is one of the reasons she is doing well in the streaming business. But you also see lots of very derogatory comments about her that never would be said about a male streamer like agadmator (who has a lower rating than Botez).

When Botez was asked about Radjabov's comments, she said that she didn't particularly like some of them, but it was of course ok if he didn't like to listen to her stream. She sounded rather upset about someone suggesting Radjabov being banned for his comments, and said she was very much against that sort of cancel culture. Her comments sounded balanced and mature compared to Radjabov's "Ching Chong" stuff and only looking at Botez with sound turned off etc.

Botez did say that she would be more surprised if what she was doing would be brought up in some positive way by a top GM, but the thing is that she is described in a totally different light by almost everyone that listened to the original stream. The YouTube comment that says that she should be banned and put in the hospital has 37 likes and no dislikes. She is called many things one can't post here without being banned. The worst thing that is said about Radjabov is that he could be a bit more careful when bringing up Botez so often and asking which one of the sisters others prefer etc.

One could also see that the participating GMs did not react in any other way than with widening their eyes, being silent, or trying to change the subject. It isn't just about "I like to call Chinese players Ching Chong and don't care if others are offended" either. Radjabov obviously didn't mean what he said in some racist way, he just should be aware that it doesn't take much to be a bit more careful with the expressions.

My friend it's called a JOKE. I found it very funny and it was supposed to be taken as a joke. I don't care what "participating GMs" responded like since they have an image to keep so even if they found it funny they would not let it show.

Ching chong comment was, once again, a joke. I am sure radjabov knows and is friends with way more chinese people than you are since he has played against china hundreds of times in things like olympiads... in real life literally no one finds it "offensive". This "offensive" culture only really shows on the internet.

I am an indian and many foreigners when referring to indians call them "punjabi" or "rohit" or something since that's the most common. Do i get offended? nope lol. I am sure chinese people call white people some stereotypical names like "mike" or something or make fun of their accent. Again, it's all in good fun and is supposed to be taken as a joke.

Coming to comment on botez, it was pretty funny. I don't get why people want to get offended over things which are supposed to be a joke lmao.

As i said, this "OMG i am offended" culture really only shows itself on the internet i found. In real life people, especially a LOT of women i know, enjoy darkish humor where u make fun of yourself, them or others.  On the internet however everyone comes together with pitchforks

If you treat minorities better than a white guy then it's textbook definition of racism against the white guy

And there's the thing you misunderstood:

"treating minorities better" doesn't necessarily mean "treating them better than white people", it can also mean "treat them better than they've been treated in the past", which is precisely what the BLM movement demands.

Minorities are treated way better than what they were in the past so congratulations for achieving that goal happy.png

Just watched- wondering about the fuss.

Botez was smiling- laughing about it all. “Weird” she said several times. She wasn’t concerned- was used to it.
Radjo just appears to be off-center but I viewed nothing malicious. Opinionated in a country boy sense. That people want to make this banter about sexism and racism is absurd- completely ridicules. It’s about personality conflicts. Chess peers just rolled their eyes -Botez laughed it off.
This thread and others like it on Reddit are more about those people seeking attention - tossing about catch phrases to create controversy where none exists.
I’m not defending Radjo. He comes across as being somewhat a jerk - but certainly not what he is being portrayed as.  Poor taste - a bad comedian is the extent of it. As for Botez- I never watched for very long. Never found the commentary that engaging. But after watching the video - think I”ll tune in. Her perspective was more adult than most everything seen here.

Frankly - many of the reactionary comments here are more objectionable than anything seen in the tube video. People will be people. Slinging about these terms is nonsense. Don’t like someone- don’t watch.

I think one should be aware that it is an expression few concerned like to hear about themselves. It's a lose-lose situation for the "recipient" of such comments, either you go along with it and imply that you find such expressions ok, or get angry and show that you have no humour. In this specific case the girl that was referred to said something offensive in return.
